There is an ever increasing number of scam artists in the world these days largely due to the unprecedented success of the Internet. This short article will expose just one of the many unethical practices that unscrupulous Internet companies engage in. This article is intended for individuals and small to medium businesses that have a website and their own domain name (or names) registered with a domain registrar. This article is specifically targeted at clients of Amherst Partners since many of you have already seen email messages similar to the following.
As you can see from the intimidating wording in this sample scam email, the sender is clearly attempting to make one think that they are in jeopardy of loosing their domain name if they don't act now. The idea is to get you to click on their link. Once you do that, they will attempt to get your Credit Card information so that they "can help you" renew your domain name registration. In fact, they are attempting to steal your business - at a premium no less - away from wherever you currently have your domain names registered. Even worse, they may simply be attempting to steal your Credit Card information.
DON'T FALL FOR THIS TACTIC! In most cases your domain names are set up to auto-renew and if your names are registered through 1and1 Computing they are never in jeopardy of expiring, unless of course you don't pay your 1and1 Hosting bill.
